Habits are the actions that make up much of our lives. They are the behaviors that we repeat so often that we don’t need to consciously think about them anymore. A habit can be a very good thing or a devastatingly bad one. Drinking eight glasses of water each day and brushing one’s teeth are positive, healthy habits. They help the individual who is doing these things. However, drug addiction and alcoholism are negative habits. They hurt the individual who engages in substance abuse as well as everyone who is close to them.
At a certain point, when the condition changes from drug and alcohol abuse to addiction, the individual is physically dependent on the substance. Addictions are habits, but they are also much more than that. The vast majority of the time, an addict can’t simply decide to make some positive changes and quit using on their own. The physical and psychological dependencies make this impossible. When a person develops an addiction to drugs or alcohol, their mood drastically changes when they can’t get hold of the substance. They will do virtually anything to continue using drugs and alcohol, including suffering negative consequences and hurting loved ones.
Addiction treatment programs work to break the cycle of these negative habits in one’s life. Changing a pattern of behavior is usually difficult for anyone. Conscious thought and effort is necessary to change the actions that have become automatic over time. However, it is even harder when that habit is an addiction and it has been going on for a long period of time. There is always hope for someone to overcome alcoholism and drug addiction, but it requires effort and help. Rehab facilities can provide the counseling and resources needed to begin learning how to change the negative habits that make up a person’s life.
