We never make a conscience effort to become an alcoholic or drug addict. It is something that happens when we decide to use the substance to overcome a problem. During the time we are under the influence the problem only gets worse.
When we come back down from the buzz the problem is still there. Except now it is worse. The decision to “get high” again seems better than dealing with the compounded issue. It is true this scenario does not happen all the time. Yet this is how easy it is for someone to become addicted to alcohol or drugs. This form of substance abuse is happening all across America. Treatment centers often are confronted with someone who just never learned how to deal with problems. The patient found it easier to hide behind a bottle or pipe or pill.
The casual drug user can find themselves caught up in a vicious cycle between peer pressure and personal issues. The substance abuse can start quite harmlessly. A casual drink can lead to a night of drunkenness. This can lead to a lifetime of alcoholism. The same holds true with any of the prescription drugs or street drugs available. Casual use can turn into substance abuse to avoid the stress of everyday life.
Drug treatment programs are designed to help the patient learn to overcome adversity. These treatment programs will allow the patient to explore the reasons which lead up to the substance abuse in the first place. Then a plan of action can be put into place. The patient can learn alternatives to drug or alcohol use when dealing with stress or anxiety.
The next time you are faced with a pressing issue and you hear yourself say you need a drink, stop. Do you really need that drink to face the issue? Can you solve it in another way? Are there steps you can take to overcome the problem? I bet the answer is yes.
