When people hear the words drug rehab or alcohol rehab, they spend little time thinking about what the words actually mean. The voices used by such people will often be using hushed tones and carry a touch of sadness if the speaker is referring to someone they know, or the words might be spoken loudly to distance the speaker from the activities that the words imply.

Drug Rehab and Alcohol rehab need not be automatically associated with shame. When a patient first checks into a facility that offers addiction services he is making a positive attempt to turn his or her life around. Many people still believe addictions are a purely mental problem caused by some lack of character inherent in an addict. Instead, addictions are usually a medical condition that can be treated.

It is true that drugs or alcohol will sometimes be used in an attempt to self-medicate, and many people who enter rehab will find that for the first time they are getting the treatment they need to deal with an undiagnosed mental health issue, but this is not always the case.

The purpose of drug rehab and alcohol rehab is to cause the patient to switch the self-destructive course his life has taken. The circumstances that lead a person into addiction treatment may not always be positive or in many cases may be court-ordered, but the treatment process itself gives a patient time to reflect and stat the process of positive change in his or her life.

It may not be something to look back positively on later, but going through such a program successfully can have a positive impact on the life of a patient. A patient should not forget to continue with the follow-up programs afterwards.
