The intervention process is a very important part of the total alcohol addiction treatment program. It is not wrong to say that without a viable intervention, most people would not check in for treatment at all.

But an effective intervention for alcohol addiction depends on the support that is received from the family members and friends of the patient. Without their intercession, nothing can be achieved. It is unfortunate to see, therefore, how some well-meaning people who agree to intervene commit blunders that might actually jeopardize the addict’s life further rather than provide suitable addiction treatment.

Most mistakes happen during the preliminary discussions when the person is still in denial and has to be convinced to sign up for treatment. Despite the professional interventionist’s guidance and training, family members and friends may end up saying the wrong things that could scare the patient. For example, they may create the impression that the detox is going to be a nasty process. Without meaning to, they take the person away from the treatment.

Another mistake is ignorance. People who so magnanimously agree to intervene in the treatment of the alcohol addict must make it a point to be with the patient throughout the treatment process. Most of them think their work is over when the person signs up at an alcohol addiction treatment center. However, it is extremely necessary that close relatives and friends keep in touch with the patient during this difficult time of seclusion and restriction.

In a similar fashion, it is also very important for the people who agree to intervene to be with the patient throughout the aftercare sessions. Without that, the patient may relapse into addiction.
