Most people in Pennsylvania do not get into addiction treatment even though they may badly need it because they think that addiction treatment is a sort of punishment. There are many reasons for holding this belief. Firstly, they believe that the detox program in Pennsylvania is unwarrantably painful and difficult to go through. Then there is the social stigma of being put into a rehab program. Also, the fact that drug courts order alcohol and drug influenced criminal offenders into programs for drug rehabilitation in Pennsylvania keeps this belief kindled. It is not difficult to understand the reluctance of people in Pennsylvania to enter into drug rehabs, howsoever much badly they may be requiring the treatment.

Education can help solve the problem, and that is what the various counseling centers in schools, colleges, offices and even hospitals and physicians’ clinics in Pennsylvania are trying to achieve. The intention is to make people understand that drug abuse or drug addiction is not a crime in itself, but it is rather like a disease. In particular, it is a mental disease, and like any other mental disease it can be treated too. This is what is done when a person enters into drug rehab in Pennsylvania. This thought is being impressed upon people through education and statewide campaigning programs so that people are not kept away from treatment any more.

Currently, only 10% of the people in Pennsylvania who need addiction treatment are actually taking it. The extensive educational campaigning may help people to overcome their emotional issues and enter into treatment before it is too late.
